Wall Street and Bitcoin outlook ahead of the U.S. rate hike announcement: The next interest rate signal matters more than 0.25 percentage points

As of 2026-09-16 at 10:48 p.m. Korea time, the U.S. Federal Reserve (Fed) has not yet announced its September interest rate decision. The current federal funds target range is 3.50–3.75%, and markets are strongly pricing in a 0.25%-point increase. Therefore, the key factor likely to determine the direction of Wall Street and Bitcoin is not simply whether rates rise, but how the Fed communicates the possibility of additional increases.

The rate announcement is scheduled for 16 at 2 p.m. U.S. Eastern Time, corresponding to 17 at 3 a.m. Korea time. A press conference will follow 30 minutes later. Economic projections will also be released at this meeting.

Will Wall Street Necessarily Fall if the Rate Hike Is Already Expected?

A 0.25%-point increase alone does not mean U.S. stocks will necessarily decline. With the market-implied probability of a 0.25%-point increase exceeding 90% immediately before the announcement, the difference between the actual decision and market expectations has become increasingly important.

Before the September 16 announcement, the yield on 10-year U.S. Treasury securities was approximately 4.97%, having also moved above 5% during the trading session. U.S. stocks had seen the S&P500 decline for 2 consecutive trading days through the previous session, while major index futures pointed to a rebound before the market opened on 16.

In other words, markets are awaiting the decision after already incorporating the expected rate hike into prices to some extent.

If the Fed raises rates by the expected 0.25% points, the federal funds target range will become 3.75–4.00%. Compared with the current 3.50–3.75% range, both the upper and lower bounds would increase by 0.25% points.

However, stock investors will be watching more than the headline interest rate. They will also examine the year-end rate projections in the economic outlook, the strength of the message regarding further monetary tightening, and how the Fed explains its future policy path during the press conference.

Consequently, markets could respond differently to an announcement containing only the expected 0.25%-point increase than to one accompanied by a strong signal that additional increases may follow.

Why Does the Signal About Further Rate Hikes Matter More Than 0.25% Points This Time?

The main reason is that markets have already priced in a substantial probability of the initial increase. Market prices before the announcement reflect expectations not only for this meeting but also for additional monetary tightening in the future.

The U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI) for August rose 0.4% from the previous month and 3.4% from 1 a year earlier. Core CPI, which excludes food and energy, increased 0.3% month over month and 2.4% year over year.

Employment figures were also stronger than expected. U.S. nonfarm payrolls increased by 16 hundred 2 thousand jobs in August, while the unemployment rate remained unchanged from the previous month at 4.1%.

At the July Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting, the Fed maintained its benchmark rate at 3.50–3.75%, although 3 committee members favored a 0.25%-point increase. Subsequent inflation and employment data helped explain why markets assigned a higher probability to a rate increase at the September meeting.

That makes the following question especially important for this announcement.

Is this 0.25%-point increase essentially a one-time adjustment, or could it lead to further rate hikes?

For Wall Street, the reaction of Treasury yields also deserves close attention. If long-term yields rise sharply again, growth stocks that are sensitive to higher discount rates could face pressure. Conversely, if concerns about additional tightening ease more than expected and bond yields stabilize, stock prices do not necessarily have to move in the same direction as the announced rate increase.

How Might Bitcoin Move After the Rate Hike Announcement?

Bitcoin is also difficult to assess using a simple rule that a rate hike automatically means a price decline. Before the September 16 announcement, Bitcoin was trading at approximately 7 ten-thousand 5 thousand to 7 ten-thousand 6 thousand dollars, after falling about 4% the previous day.

The Fed was not the only factor influencing prices. Cryptocurrency markets weakened after procedural progress on digital asset legislation failed in the U.S. Senate. As a result, Bitcoin prices are currently being influenced by both monetary policy and cryptocurrency regulation.

Short-term correlations have also changed. Data compiled on the announcement day showed Bitcoin's short-term correlation coefficient with the U.S. Dollar Index at +0.08 and its correlation with the S&P500 at 0.43. The latter was lower than the previous day's correlation of 0.75 with the S&P500.

This means it would be difficult to assume that Bitcoin will move in exactly the same direction as Wall Street following the Fed announcement.

Rather than focusing only on Bitcoin's price immediately after the announcement, it is more useful to monitor U.S. Treasury yields, the dollar, and the price level at which Bitcoin stabilizes after the press conference.

What Should Investors Check First Immediately After the Rate Announcement?

Four factors, examined in order, can make it easier to interpret the market reaction to this FOMC meeting.

First is the actual benchmark interest rate. Investors should confirm whether the Fed raises rates by the expected 0.25% points, bringing the target range to 3.75–4.00%.

Second is the projected policy rate path included in the economic outlook. Because this meeting includes quarterly economic projections, changes in the expected interest rate trajectory for the end of this year and beyond will be important.

Third is the yield on 10-year U.S. Treasury securities. Since it had already climbed toward 5% before the announcement, the direction of long-term yields afterward will be an important factor in understanding Wall Street's response.

Finally, investors should consider Bitcoin-specific factors. The cryptocurrency market is currently reflecting not only U.S. monetary policy but also digital asset regulatory developments. Therefore, assuming that Bitcoin will follow the Nasdaq by the same magnitude and in the same direction would not adequately explain current market conditions.

Could an Unexpected Decision to Hold Rates Steady Actually Be Good News?

A decision not to raise rates would not automatically be positive for stocks and Bitcoin. Before the announcement, markets were assigning a probability exceeding 90% to a 0.25%-point increase.

If the Fed unexpectedly holds rates steady, investors will first try to understand why it made a decision that differed from market expectations. As a result, volatility in stocks, bonds, the dollar, and Bitcoin could increase immediately after the announcement, depending more on the reasons behind the decision and the explanations provided at the press conference than on the interest rate level itself.

This is why the current FOMC meeting should not be interpreted simply as a case of 'higher rates mean lower risk asset prices.' Instead, investors should consider how much of the 0.25%-point increase is already priced in, how the path of additional rate hikes changes, and where 10-year U.S. Treasury yields move after the announcement.

The announcement is scheduled for September 17 at 3 a.m. Korea time, with the press conference scheduled for 3:30 a.m. The next direction of Wall Street and Bitcoin should be reassessed after the actual decision, economic projections, and press conference remarks become available.

Stock and cryptocurrency prices are influenced by numerous factors beyond interest rates, including economic conditions, corporate earnings, bond markets, and regulation. Therefore, no particular price direction or investment return can be guaranteed.
