Why the Fed Sees AI Investment as an Inflation Factor—and What It Means for U.S. Stocks and Bitcoin

As of 9:31 p.m. Korea time on 2026-07-11, U.S. stocks had risen on optimism surrounding AI semiconductors, but the Federal Reserve's latest report shifted market attention back to inflation and interest rates.

The Fed identified demand for advanced products needed to expand AI services as one of the factors contributing to inflation, alongside tariffs and higher energy prices stemming from developments in the Middle East. The current federal funds target range is 3.50–3.75%, and the next key event for assessing the direction of monetary policy is the release of the U.S. June Consumer Price Index.

Markets are now navigating a period in which expectations for AI-driven growth and inflationary pressures are operating simultaneously.

Three Inflationary Pressures Identified by the Fed

The Fed's July Monetary Policy Report identifies three main factors affecting inflation.

The first is that previously increased tariffs are being reflected in U.S. prices for certain imported goods.

The second is higher energy prices resulting from the conflict in the Middle East and constraints on oil supplies. Energy costs can affect the prices of goods and services through transportation and production expenses.

The third is demand for AI data centers and related equipment. AI investment can improve productivity and support economic growth, but if demand for servers, semiconductors, electricity, and networking equipment grows faster than supply, it can create short-term price pressures.

However, the Fed has not concluded that AI as a whole is responsible for inflation. Its assessment is more narrowly focused on how demand for advanced AI-related products and large-scale investment may affect certain prices and financial conditions.

Why U.S. Stocks Rose Despite the Inflation Warning

During the July 10 U.S. trading session, the S&P500 rose 0.4%, while the Nasdaq and Dow Jones Industrial Average each gained 0.3%. Meanwhile, the small-cap-focused Russell 2000 declined 0.5%.

Although the major indexes suggested a modestly positive market, individual stock performance was uneven. Capital was concentrated in AI and memory semiconductor stocks, while Nvidia gained approximately 4.0% to reach USD 210.96.

Rather than indicating a broad improvement in economic expectations, this pattern may suggest that optimism about AI investment and corporate earnings temporarily offset the pressure that interest rates place on large technology stocks.

From the author's perspective, the breadth of advancing stocks matters more than the headline index gains. If only major AI stocks are rising while smaller companies remain weak, it is difficult to conclude that overall market strength has improved substantially.

Why Didn't Bitcoin Rise by the Same Amount?

At the time of observation, Bitcoin was trading at approximately USD 64,119, around 0.5% below its previous closing price.

Technology stocks and Bitcoin are both sensitive to liquidity and interest rates, but they do not always move together.

U.S. technology stocks have direct catalysts for gains, including AI revenue and corporate earnings. Bitcoin, by contrast, may be more heavily influenced by ETF fund flows, the value of the dollar, Treasury yields, and leveraged positions.

If AI stocks rise on earnings expectations while concerns about higher Treasury yields persist, Bitcoin may show comparatively limited movement.

What to Watch in the July 14 CPI Report

The U.S. June Consumer Price Index is scheduled for release at 9:30 p.m. Korea time on July 14.

The difference between market forecasts and actual figures matters, but it is also useful to examine the following indicators.

How much energy prices contributed to overall inflation

The trend in core inflation, which excludes volatile food and energy prices

Whether housing and services inflation are slowing

How 2-year and 10-year U.S. Treasury yields move immediately after the release

Whether the Nasdaq and Bitcoin respond in the same direction to changes in Treasury yields

Watching core inflation and Treasury yields together is more useful for assessing market reactions than focusing on a single CPI figure.

What to Check Under Different CPI Outcomes

CPI OutcomeFirst Signal to CheckGenerally Possible Market Reaction
Below market expectationsWhether U.S. Treasury yields declineInterest-rate pressure on growth stocks and Bitcoin may ease
In line with expectationsCorporate earnings and AI investment plansPerformance differences between individual stocks may become more pronounced than movements in the broader indexes
Above expectations2-year Treasury yields and dollar strengthVolatility in highly valued technology stocks and Bitcoin may increase

This table is not intended to predict outcomes. Instead, it provides a sequence of indicators to examine after the announcement. Even with the same CPI result, market direction can vary depending on energy prices, core inflation, and comments from Federal Reserve officials.

The Current Market Trend in One Sentence

AI investment is supporting growth in the U.S. economy and semiconductor companies, but it is also increasing demand for equipment, electricity, and capital, potentially adding pressure to inflation and Treasury yields.

As a result, the current U.S. stock market is better characterized as a tug-of-war between expectations for AI earnings and inflationary pressures than as a rally driven solely by hopes for interest-rate cuts.

Price fluctuations can intensify rapidly around the CPI release, so it is safer not to make definitive judgments about the direction of stocks or Bitcoin based on a single economic indicator.
