The Key Requirement from South Korea’s Privacy Regulator for Samsung AI Glasses: Protection That Stops Recording Even When the Indicator Is Covered
The central issue in the controversy over Samsung AI Glasses is not a launch ban. Rather, the requirement is to ensure that people nearby can immediately recognize when cameras and microphones are operating and recording or collecting data. The confirmed stage is preliminary consultation between South Korea’s Personal Information Protection Commission and Samsung Electronics. No sales suspension or regulatory sanctions have been finalized.

Samsung has disclosed three privacy safeguards.
• LEDs illuminate on both the inside and outside of the glasses during recording
• Recording is blocked when the glasses are not being worn
• Recording is disabled when the external LED is covered
What matters is not simply the presence of an LED indicator.
The actual level of protection depends on whether the camera reliably stops working when the indicator is covered with a sticker or physically obstructed, and whether the same safeguards apply not only to photographs but also to video recording and other recognition functions.
Here is a checklist worth saving when evaluating AI glasses.
① Can people nearby immediately recognize when recording or audio capture is taking place?
② Are the relevant functions automatically disabled if the indicator is covered or damaged?
③ Can users review the rules governing the storage, transmission, and AI use of video and audio data?
Samsung has stated that it does not use voice, video, or screen-sharing data to train AI models. However, the product’s final features, terms of service, and country-specific operating practices will need to be checked again at launch.
The standards for AI glasses do not end with the question, “What can they do?”
It is equally important to ask, “What information do they provide to people nearby, and how do they stop operating when someone attempts to bypass the safeguards?”
